Drive by wire throttle is something that has really started to take over when it comes to controlling the throttle butterfly. In the past, a cable controlled the throttle bodies throttle plate. This cable was directly hooked to the accelerator pedal.
Benefits of Drive by Wire (DBW) Throttle. No throttle cable issues: While a throttle cable represents a remarkably simple solution, it does have its drawbacks. Over time the steel cable can stretch, and it may require adjustments to allow proper idle and full-throttle operation.
Throttle by wire was added to motorcycles so the ECU could control the engine output instead of the rider. So you go to the dealer and pay up the wazoo for the latest greatest mega horsepower bike only to discover that it spends most of its time derating its output. Reply reply
A drive-by-wire car has an accelerator pedal linked directly to the cable then to the throttle. Its arrangement may seem too complicated, but it has excellent benefits. One of its benefits is that its arrangement allows only a miniature electric motor between the body of the throttle and its cable. Next, you have more access to your throttle valve.
The throttle valve which opens and closes to adjust the air-flow into the engine is controlled by a cable connecting the accelerator pedal. Nowadays, most cars do not have that cable. Instead, the throttle valve is electronically actuated by the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) using inputs from the accelerator pedal.
Drive by Wire or simply 'DbW' is also known as the X-by-Wire. It is a semi-automatic, computer controlled technology mainly used in cars. It is quite similar to Ride by wire technology used in bikes. DbW controls the vehicular systems such as the acceleration, handling, braking, steering and other functions of a motor vehicle.

Fly by wire throttles are driven by servo motors in conjunction with a potentiometer. In english, when you push the throttle it takes readings to see were it is, and then the servo opens the throttle to the correct place. The more readings it takes the better it is, but that takes a more powerful 'brain'.
